The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, has announced a series of reforms to the Mobility Law and the Traffic Regulations aimed at regulating motorcycles and electric scooters in the capital. The main objective of these modifications is to ensure road safety, maintain order in traffic, and protect the environment.
Among the proposed measures are the implementation of programs like Photo-violations, aimed at raising awareness among citizens about the dangers of high speed and deterring recidivism in risky behaviors. It is planned to install 150 radars at different points in the city to monitor and prevent fatal accidents.
Clara Brugada emphasized that these actions not only seek to regulate electric vehicles but also to improve coexistence in traffic and reduce risks for all users of public roads. The reforms aim to protect users of these vehicles, prevent accidents, and promote safe use of the streets.
Regarding electric motorcycles, defined as those with a speed exceeding 25 km/h, it is established that they must comply with the same regulations as internal combustion motorcycles, including the use of plates, circulation cards, helmets, and lights on during driving. Additionally, they will not be allowed to circulate on bike lanes or sidewalks and must register with the Mobility Secretariat of CDMX if their permit was issued in another federal entity.
On the other hand, scooters and electric skateboards, considered non-motorized vehicles if their maximum speed is 25 km/h or less, must adhere to the regulations established for bicycles. They must circulate in bike lanes and, in their absence, preferably use the right lane on the streets.
During the third quarter of 2024, there were 19,207 traffic accidents recorded in CDMX, showing a decrease of 10.6% compared to the previous period. However, motorcyclists continue to lead the statistics for fatalities and injuries from accidents in the city. With these reforms, it is expected to improve road safety and reduce traffic incidents, prioritizing the protection of all users of the capital's roads.
